All You Would Like to Know about the Brake Overhauling Work

Although Brake overhauling does not need much work, but if required it should be done to improve safety, prolong the like of the brakes enhancing the brake’s performance.

Precautions for Brake Repair

  • Avoid crawling under a vehicle if it is not properly supported
  • Wear protection for breathing
  • Replacing or resurfacing rotors and drums
  • Do not open or replace any brake lines or components if the vehicle has an ABS system
  • Ensure that the braking system is deactivated before you work on a vehicle with antilock brake system

Inspection of Brakes

The first step is a thorough inspection of the brake system that includes the antilock brake system too. This can be done in several ways

  • Apply brakes while starting the engine. If the pedal drops it is an indication of good vacuum booster while no boost means a leaking vacuum connection.
  • If the brake pedal feels soft and mushy instead of being firm indicates the presence of air in the lines. A low pedal means worn linings or low fluid levels or a frozen drum brakes that will need to be adjusted.
  • Check the parking brake and if it fails to hold the vehicle you will have to get it adjusted.
  • Measure the thickness of brake pads after removing one of the front wheels. New linings will be required if the wear indicators are getting into contact with the rotor.

Replacing Brake Pads

Several brands and grades of replacement brake pads can be got. It is recommended to use premium pads like ceramic or non-metallic for vehicles where noise, wear & tear, overuse or high temperature application is the problem. It is advised to replace with the same or better brake pads, like an NAO brake pad should be replaced with an NAO or with an upgraded ceramic or non-metallic one.

If there is a sign of a leaking oil or brake fluid from the caliper then it has to be replaced or rebuilt before you install new brake pads.

Check Rotors

In case there are scratches or grooves on the rotor it will need resurfacing or replacement. The general rule is that rotors should have less than .003 and more than.0015 inches of runout. The next step is to check the calipers and caliper mounts. Next is the inspection of the drum surface, wheel cylinder, brake shoes and other hardware.

Replace Brake Hardware

Brake overhauling includes new hardware. When brake shoes are replaced attention should be paid to other hardware like return springs and wheel bearings. Ensure that shoe support pads on drum backing plates and the parking brake system are lubricated with brake lubricants.

Bleed Brakes

Complete brake job includes bleeding or fresh brake fluid. The brake fluid over time tends to absorb moisture due to which its boiling point is lowered leading to internal corrosion. The fluid should be changed every two years for preventive maintenance.

Minimizing Noise

Brake overhauling also helps to reduce any noise due to vibrations. This could be because of excessive runout of the rotors, loose pads, glazed linings or worn, rusted or loose caliper mounts.

Finishing the Brake Overhauling Job

Once the brake repairs are complete, the brake pedal is pumped repeatedly to test the firmness of the pedal before you drive the vehicle. A test drive at slow speed is necessary to see that the brakes are working fine.
